High School Student Shot; Police Investigate Incident

A shooting near Mount Vernon High School Thursday night left a 17-year-old Mount Vernon High School student with a collapsed lung after being shot in the lower back. The incident occurred around 6:20pm alongside the high school located at 100 California Road. Mount Vernon Police Internal Affairs Unit say there were several witnesses to the incident which appear to involved two groups on opposite sides of the street. 9mm and .22 caliber shell casings were recovered from the area.

Police cannot assess the reason for the dispute or the shooting. Despite surveillance cameras surround the area, lighting on the road is dim and detectives are aggressively investigating the occurrence.

No other victims were reported and the student remains in recovery at an undisclosed Hospital with no life threatening injuries.
