Before making national headlines on the topic of school reform, the new Acting Chancellor of DC Public Schools, Kaya Henderson, was a Mount Vernon girl. Shortly after her November 1 appointment to the position, Henderson gave an exclusive interview to Mount Vernon Today and reflected on her passion for education and what her hometown and the nation must do to be competitive.

Henderson’s personal story makes it clear why she picked a career in education. “Over the course of my growing up, I had a great education in Mount Vernon public school,” she begins. “My parents were able to -- my mother especially -- move out of poverty and solidly into the middle class only because we had a great public education in Mount Vernon.”

CMV NewsMount Vernon, NY - On November 20, 2010 at 10:00am the New York in Motion Drum Corp from Mount Vernon, NY will be performing in the 47th annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in the City of New Rochelle.  This year, the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce will present this fun filled, exciting Thanksgiving Day Parade, with special host and Grand Master, Fire Commissioner Raymond “Doc” Kiernan.

CMV NewsMount Vernon, NY – Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr., and the Mount Vernon Department of Recreation will be hosting A Holiday Salute to Old Broadway in the Mount Vernon City Hall rotunda on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 6:00pm.  The extraordinarily talented children of the Young at Arts program will be performing holiday season songs, dancing and a variety of sing-a-longs.

“The holiday season is a time to share and open our hearts to others. This group of young individuals has done just that, learning and embracing the field of music and arts.  The Young at Arts students continue to give back not only to themselves but to everyone around them.  It is programs and events like this that give our city its great name,” stated Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr.

November 30th Deadline Approaching for Two Scholarships

 

  • Vanguard Minority Scholarship Program,  merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to minority students pursuing studies in business, finance, economics or accounting. To be considered, the student must be a racial minority, be entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate study in the fall of 2011, be enrolled full-time in an accredited four-year college or university in the United States, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  The student must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States.

    Deadline: November 30, 2010

  • Vanguard Women in Information Technology Scholarship Program, provides merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to female students studying computer science, computer engineering, Web design, or other IT-related disciplines.  To be considered for the program, the applicant must be a female undergraduate entering their junior or senior year of college in the fall of 2011, be enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited college or university in the United States, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  The student must be a U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
